A Catered Affair, the Broadway-bound musical that played an out-of-town tryout at San Diego's Old Globe, was the big winner of the evening, taking seven awards, including one for Outstanding New Musical. Another imminent arrival on The Great White Way, Cry-Baby — based on the John Waters film of the same name — picked up two awards for its run at the La Jolla Playhouse.

Special awards were presented to Jack O'Brien (Lifetime Achievement Award) and Esther Emery (first Jack O'Brien Excellence in Directing Award). Floyd Gaffney, the San Diego African-American theatre innovator who passed away in 2007, was honored posthumously.
