The Paul Simon-Derek Walcott musical The Capeman will be the subject of a segment on CBS-TV's "Public Eye with Bryant Gumbel," Jan. 21, 9 PM (EST). According to "Public Eye" spokesperson Kerri Weitzberg, the footage was taped since the new year, with b-roll shooting taken even more recently. Simon is interviewed by Gumbel in the piece; the other Capeman creators are not.
Though Simon is more inclined to discuss protests about the show's content than its bumpy artistic ride to opening night, he reportedly does tell Gumbel, "I think I did do good work... Do I think that its controversy is going to be such that people will stay away in droves? They haven't so far... Does it matter what the reviews say? Probably -- that's the history of Broadway."
The musical is heading into its last week of previews before a planned Jan. 29 opening.
