The musical, which features a score by Brown and a book by Dan Elish, will be presented by the Center Theatre Group of Los Angeles in 2006. The workshop production will be directed by Todd Graff. In a mass e-mail, composer Brown said, "We go into rehearsal [for 13] at the end of January for a three-week process; casting starts in two weeks!  We should probably finish writing the show." On book writer Elish's website, Elish says, "13 is a musical comedy that stars thirteen 13 year olds."

Jason Robert Brown, who was the musical director and arranger for the musical Urban Cowboy, won the Tony Award for Best Score for his Broadway debut, Parade. His two-person musical, The Last Five Years, played a brief run at Off-Broadway's Minetta Lane Theatre, and was preserved on Sh-K-Boom Records. Brown also composed the score for Songs for a New World and wrote incidental music for Fuddy Meers, Kimberly Akimbo, The Waverly Gallery and the Irish Repertory Theatre's production of Long Day's Journey Into Night.
