News   Charles West Will Be El Gallo in Off-Broadway's The Fantasticks Charles West, who has been seen on Broadway in The Scarlet Pimpernel and Show Boat, will temporarily step into the role of El Gallo in Off-Broadway's The Fantasticks.

West will assume that role for 12 performances June 18-26. Edward Watts returns from vacation and reassumes the role beginning June 27.

A modern twist on Romeo and Juliet, The Fantasticks, according to press notes, is the "quintessential story of boy and girl sweethearts who go out into the world and discover that with love comes responsibility, with independence comes danger, and with experience comes joy."

West has also been seen in the national tour of Miss Saigon as Chris and the West Side Story European tour as Tony.

The Fantasticks company also includes Edward Watts, Bill Bateman, Matt Dengler, MacIntyre Dixon, Tom Flagg, Matt Leisy, Anne Markt, Michael Nostrand, Dan Sharkey and Juliette Trafton.

The production has choreography by Janet Watson with musical direction by Robert Felstein.

The Fantasticks resumed performances Off-Broadway at the Snapple Theater Center's Jerry Orbach Theater June 16, 2008. The musical began a winter hiatus Feb. 24, 2008, following 27 previews and 628 regular performances at the Orbach Theater. The musical originally opened at the Sullivan Street Playhouse in May 1960 and closed Jan. 13, 2002.

Harvey Schmidt wrote the music and Tom Jones penned the book and lyrics. Word Baker directed the original Off-Broadway company.
