News Chicago Jeff Awards Go to Richard Kind, Marc Robin, Cider House Rules, Singin' in the Rain Regional theatres might take greater notice of The Cider House Rules, Parts I and II starting this week. On Nov. 3, the play version of the novel won a collection of 2003 Joseph Jefferson Awards for its staging by Famous Door Theatre.

The Jeff Awards ceremony, celebrating the best of Chicago's Equity theatre season, also brought Jeffs to Richard Kind of Bounce, choreographer Marc Robin (for a resident staging of Cats at the Marriott Theatre) and Singin' in the Rain (Best Musical Production).

Famous Door's Cider House Rules won Jeffs for Production, Director, Ensemble, Principal Actor, Supporting Actress and Original Music.

There was a three-way tie for New Work: Theatre District, Only the Sound and We All Went Down to Amsterdam.

There was also a tie in the Musical Revue category. Second City competed with itself and won, twice.

Richard Kind, playing one of the rich and eccentric Mizner brothers in the new Stephen Sondheim musical, Bounce, which played the Goodman Theatre, is currently repeating his work at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. The gala 2003 Jeff Awards presentation was held Nov. 3 at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie, Illinois.

Founded in 1968, the mission of the Joseph Jefferson Awards Committee is to honor excellence in theatrical productions in the Chicago theatre community.

Originally chartered to recognize only Equity productions, the non-Equity Citations wing was founded by the Jeff Committee in 1973 to celebrate outstanding achievement in non-union Chicago theatre.
