The star of the Tony-winning revival of Kiss Me, Kate, Amy Spanger, returns to Broadway Aug. 6 when she joins the company of another Tony winning revival, Chicago. Spanger will portray merry murderess Roxie Hart in the Kander and Ebb classic, currently playing the Shubert Theatre. Spanger is no stranger to Chicago, having played Roxie Hart in the show's national tour as well as the role of June on Broadway. The former star of Off-Broadway's tick, tick . . . Boom! also stoodby for both leading roles — Roxie and Velma Kelly — on Broadway. Spanger is scheduled to stay with the New York company through Sept. 10.
In addition to Kiss Me, Kate and tick, tick . . . Boom!, Spanger played the role of Maureen in the first national tour of the Pulitzer Prize winning musical Rent and also appeared in the Broadway production of Sunset Boulevard. Her Chicago castmates include Stephanie Pope (Velma Kelly), Rob Bartlett (Amos Hart), Roz Ryan (Matron "Mama" Morton) and R. Bean (Mary Sunshine). Spanger's husband, "Six Feet Under" star Michael C. Hall, also recently joined the Chicago company as slimy lawyer Billy Flynn.
Bob Fosse, John Kander and Fred Ebb's Chicago, presented by Barry and Fran Weissler, plays the Shubert Theatre, 225 W. 44th Street. It won the Tony for Best Revival of a Musical in 1997 as well as awards for actors Bebe Neuwirth and James Naughton, director Walter Bobbie, lighting designer Ken Billington and choreographer Ann Reinking. The original production was directed and choreographed by the late Bob Fosse. For ticket information, call (212) 239-6200.
