The Jeff Committee judged 108 productions from 49 producing organizations, staged between April 1, 2000-March 31, 2001. The "non competitive" awards may have multiple winners in various categories, according to spokesperson Bruce K. Siewerth.

The Jeff Awards for union-scale productions — both homegrown and non resident — generally occur in November. The Equity-oriented Jefferson Awards began in 1968. The non-Equity Citations began in 1973.

Last year, Circle Theatre, with six awards for The Crime of the Century, topped the winners list. This year Lifeline Theatre (with 12 nominations) and Eclipse Theatre ( with 11) look to top Circle for the 28th annual honors.
