Arthur Sullivan and W.S. Gilbert's The Mikado will kick off the season Sept. 9. Set in the fictional town of Titipu, The Mikado, according to Lyric Stage, "is a tale of the beautiful school girl Yum-Yum who is engaged to be married to Ko-Ko despite her love for the romantic wandering minstrel, Nanki-Poo. Will these two young lovers find their happily-ever-after… or will heads roll?" Performances will continue through Oct. 13.

Following The Mikado will be The Chosen, adapted by Aaron Posner and Chaim Potok from the novel by  Potok. Set in 1940s Brooklyn, the coming-of-age story follows two boys from different cultural groups as their relationships with each other, their families and their own spirituality evolve. The Chosen will run Oct. 19-Nov. 17 with an official opening set for Oct. 21.

Tony Award winner Hwang's Chinglish will run Nov. 30-Dec. 23 with an official opening set for Dec. 2. Chinglish, according to Lyric Stage, "follows the amusing antics of an American businessman looking to cash in on the growth potential of a bustling Chinese province. He engages a British consultant to navigate the linguistic and cultural clash his venture unwittingly sparks and gets more than he bargained for."

Kaufman's 33 Variations, featuring Paula Plum and James Andreassi, will kick off 2013, running Jan. 4-Feb. 2. Here's how the play is billed: "A mother coming to terms with her daughter. A composer coming to terms with his gift. Separated by 200 years, these two people share an obsession that transcends the boundaries of time. Moisés Kaufman has written an extraordinary play about the creative process, parenthood, the genius of Beethoven, and the moments of beauty that can transform life." The official opening is set for Jan. 6.

Marie Jones' Stones in His Pockets will run Feb. 15-March 16 with an official opening set for Feb. 17. Stones in His Pockets is described as "the hilarious and poignant story of a rural Irish village turned upside down by the arrival of an American film crew. When Charlie and Jake are cast as extras in the movie, they discover that Hollywood's romanticized Ireland stands in stark contrast to the reality of their daily lives." By the Way, Meet Vera Stark, by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage, will run March 29-April 27. The play is a "70-year journey through the life of Vera Stark, a headstrong African-American maid and budding actress, and her tangled relationship with her boss, a white Hollywood star desperately grasping to hold on to her career. When circumstances collide and both women land roles in the same Southern epic, the story behind the cameras leaves Vera with a surprising and controversial legacy scholars will debate for years to come." The official opening is set for March 31.

On The Town, featuring music by Leonard Bernstein with a book and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, will conclude the season. The musical, which will run May 10-June 8, is based on an idea by Jerome Robbins. Here's how it's described: "Meet Chip, Ozzie, and Gabey – three American sailors with one day in New York City to see the sights, meet a girl, and have the time of their lives." The official opening is set for May 12.
