Two-time Tony nominee Christine Andreas will join cabaret favorite Klea Blackhurst and Broadway actors George Dvorsky and Nicolas King in an October 27 salute to George and Ira Gershwin at the Schimmel Center in New York City.
Part of the theatre’s Salon Songbook series, the 7:30 PM Gershwins and Friends concert will be directed by Mark Waldrop (When Pigs Fly) and hosted, curated, and written by Deborah Grace Winer, former artistic director of 92nd Street YM-YWHA’s Lyrics & Lyricists series. The show will celebrate the brothers’ contribution to the American Songbook, including Broadway shows Porgy and Bess, Girl Crazy, Strike Up the Band, and Oh, Kay!.
Earlier in October the Schimmel Center is also hosting American Dance Spectacular!, which will explore the history of American popular dance 7:30 PM October 21. Directed and co-written by Daniel C. Levine (a performer in Broadway’s The Rocky Horror Show and Jesus Christ Superstar) with choreography by Al Blackstone (So You Think You Can Dance), the show will employ six Broadway dancers backed by three singers and a live band to showcase the Charleston, Lindy hop, jitterbug, twist, voguing, and other popular dances.
