Christine Ebersole will make her L.A. Opera debut in Candide. The two-time Tony Award winner, who currently stars in War Paint on Broadway, will take on the role of the Old Lady, appearing opposite the previously announced Kelsey Grammer (who plays Pangloss).
Performances will run January 27 through February 18, 2018, at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles.
The cast also includes Jack Swanson as Candide, Erin Morley (currently appearing in Les Contes d’Hoffmann at the Met) as Cunegonde, Theo Hoffman as Maximillian/Reverend Father, Matthew Scollin as Martin, Brian Michael Moore as the Grand Inquisitor, and Taylor Raven as the Baroness. Francesca Zambello directs.
Ebersole, a Tony winner for 42nd Street and Grey Gardens, earned an additional nomination earlier this year for her performance as Elizabeth Arden in War Paint (running through November 5 at the Nederlander Theatre). She stars opposite fellow two-time Tony winner Patti LuPone, who coincidentally played the Old Lady in the New York Philharmonic’s 2004 concert presentation of Candide.
The production is part of a worldwide, two-year celebration of the Leonard Bernstein centennial.
