Classic Arts News Cincinnati Pops to Make Landmark Tour of China The Cincinnati Pops will become the first pops orchestra to tour China with concerts this fall in Beijing and Shanghai, the orchestra announced yesterday.
In Beijing, the orchestra will play October 21-22 at the Great Hall of the People in Tiananmen Square. In Shanghai, the orchestra will be performing as part of the China Shanghai International Arts Festival on October 24, and then will go to Singapore and perform October 26-27 at the Esplanade, which is part of the Theatres on the Bay complex.

Erich Kunzel, the longtime conductor of the Pops, will lead the orchestra, with vocalist Daniel Narducci as the tour's guest artist.

"A tour to China and Singapore is a historic event for the Cincinnati Pops," Kunzel said. "I've guest-conducted in China before, but appear with the Cincinnati Pops during my 40th anniversary year will be very special to me."

The programming for the Beijing and Shanghai performances was not released, but the Singapore concerts will consist of American film scores. One concert will feature fantasy film music, such as the scores to Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, and the other will feature scores from movies as Doctor Zhivago and Chicago.

The Cincinnati Pops is very popular in China, selling hundreds of thousands of albums.
