Clifton Duncan has joined the now-complete cast of the June Off-Broadway revival of Carmen Jones at Classic Stage Company in the role of Joe. The upcoming production marks the first major New York staging of the Oscar Hammerstein II musical since the 1943 original Broadway production.
Duncan was most recently seen on Broadway in The Play That Goes Wrong, as well as The Balladeer in City Center's Encores! staging of Assassins. The actor joins a previously announced cast that will be led by Tony Award winner Anika Noni Rose in the title role, along with David Aron Damane as Husky Miller, Erica Dorfler as Myrt, Andrea Jones-Sojola as Sally, Justin Keyes as Rum, Lindsay Roberts as Cindy Lou, Soara-Joye Ross as Frankie, Lawrence E. Street as Dink, and Tramell Tillman as Sergeant Brown.
Helmed by Tony-winning Artistic Director John Doyle with choreography by fellow Tony winner Bill T. Jones, the Off-Broadway revival will now begin performances June 9 instead of the previously reported June 8. The production will officially open June 27 and is scheduled through July 29.
Featuring a book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, Carmen Jones brings the score of Georges Bizet's iconic, Spain-set opera to southern America during World War II, as Carmen, now a parachute factory worker, is caught in a love triangle with an airman and boxer.
The CSC production will feature scenic design by Tony Award winner Scott Pask, costumes by Tony Award winner Ann Hould-Ward, lighting by Adam Honoré, sound by Dan Moses Shreier, and casting by Telsey + Company. Music supervision and orchestrations are by Joseph Joubert.
