The Broadway production of Patrick Marber's Closer will close Aug. 22 at the Music Box Theatre. The drama will have run 173 performances with 17 previews.
Actress Polly Draper ("thirtysomething," Imagining Brad) joined the cast June 15, replacing original star Natasha Richardson (Cabaret) as the photographer, Anna. Also in the cast are Anna Friel (Alice), Ciaran Hinds (Larry) and Rupert Graves (Dan). The British cast members had been confirmed to stay with the show until mid-September.
Marber, whose first New York play was Dealer's Choice at Manhattan Theatre Club, also directed.
Nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play, Closer opened March 25, 1999 at the Music Box Theatre. The show was selected as Best Foreign Play by the New York Drama Critics Circle. The cast was awarded the Outer Critics' Circle Special Achievement Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance. Friel, Graves and Hinds all received Theatre World Awards for their New York debuts.
Closer, which explores the vicissitudes of modern love, features a quartet of lovers caught up in a web of love, lust, sex and betrayal. The various London casts of foursomes featured many prominent actors, including Liza Walker, Frances Barber, Imogen Stubbs, Neil Pearson, Lloyd Owen and Tom Mannion.
Among its many accolades in its London run at the Royal National Theatre, Closer won the 1997 Time Out Award for Best Play in the West End, the 1997 Evening Standard Best Comedy Award, the 1997 Critics Circle Best Play Award and the 1998 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play. Marber was also a runner-up for the 1997 Lloyds' Playwright of the Year Award.
