Idina Menzel will give her final "moo" in Rent on July 1. The actress/singer, who has her own web page (www.idina.com), is leaving to work on an album for Hollywood Records. Sherie Scott will be the new Maureen in Jonathan Larson's blockbuster musical. Scott will be reunited with director Michael Greif with whom she worked with in Randy Newman's Faust (playing Martha) at La Jolla Playhouse and Goodman Theatre. According to her bio, "In the fall of 1998, Ms. Scott will star on Broadway in Disney's Aida (music by Elton John and Tim Rice)."
Also at the Nederlander, Jesse L. Martin will leave the role of Tom Collins July 13 to co-star in a new Fox television series, "413 Hope Street". Michael McElroy, who co-starred as Flick in Jeanine Tesori and Brian Crawley's Violet at Playwrights Horizons, will be Martin's replacement.
She's back! Tony-nominated DeLee Lively is once again shimmying to the songs of Leiber and Stoller at Smokey Joe's Cafe after a hiatus from Broadway to open the enthusiastically-received London production. Natasha Rennalls, who has been burning up the stage nightly in the interim, becomes Lively's standby.
Elizabeth Paw, Miss Saigon's most recent Kim alternate (Wednesday evening and Saturday matinee performances) has moved to the touring company, where she performs six times a week as the principal lead. Roxanne Taga moves back to the alternate position in the Broadway production. Guy Paul, who plays Sir Edward Ramsey in Christopher Renshaw's production of The King and I, has departed; Graeme Malcolm is his replacement. Meanwhile, Jose Llana's final performance as Lun Tha, one half of the musical's "young lovers", will be June 29. Benjamin Bryant will sing "We Kiss in a Shadow" and "I Have Dreamed" nightly with Cornilla Luna (who replaced Joohee Choi in March) beginning July 1.
