Cowgirls, the country-western musical, has extended its ride into Atlanta's Horizon Theatre Company through Aug. 29, with performances at the 14th Street Playhouse. The production opened July 16, and was originally scheduled to close on Aug. 15.
Written by Betsy Howie (Yours, Truly and The Bridal Fit) with music and lyrics by Mary Murfitt (Oil City Symphony), Cowgirls is really about the Coghill Trio, who are mistakenly booked to perform at country-western bar Hiram Hall's grand re-opening when their name is read as the Cowgirls Trio. Unfortunately for the Hall, the Coghill ladies are a classical music group, but they learn quickly how to bridge the musical gap between country and classical. Soul-stice Theatre Company artistic director Heidi Cline directs.
Cowgirls played Off-Broadway in 1994, running for 319 performances and 16 previews at the Minetta Lane Theatre.
The Coghill Trio is played by Rebekah Baty as Lee, the new-agey cellist; real life WGKA 1190 deejay Keely Brown as Rita, the pregnant pianist; and Beverly Blouin as Mary Lou, the perfectionist violinist. Felicia Hernandez plays Hiram Hall owner Jo; Michelle Beamer is waitress Mickey, and Susie Grimley plays Hiram Hall employee, Mo.
Cowgirls designers are Lizz Forsey (set), Jonna Schmink (costumes), Pete Shinn (lights) and Dung Nguyen (sound). Tickets are $28-$20 and are available by calling (404) 733-5000. The 14th Street Playhouse is located at the corner of 14th and Juniper Streets.
