First they got Snakebit, now Bees will attack -- sounds like a rough summer. But actually, attendees of Florida's Caldwell Theatre Company are likely having a good time of it, since two Off-Broadway hits have reached the mainstage.
Snakebit, the play by actor-cum-dramatist David Marshall Grant, ended its scheduled run July 23. As Bees in Honey Drown, staged by Kenneth Kay, arrives Aug. 5-27. Bees, by Douglas Carter Beane (The Country Club), deals with Evan Wyler, a first-time novelist who is hired by an eccentric, rich woman named Alexa Vere de Vere to write a screenplay based on her life. Even though Wyler has known success, he is attracted by the glamour and trappings of Alexa's world, only to discover much to his rue that she is a con artist who has stuck him with all her bills.
Kim Cozort essays the lead role played by J. Smith Cameron Off Broadway. Also in the FL cast are Mark Heimann, Tanya Bravo, Stephanie McNeil, Tom Wahl and Michael Warga.
Tickets to each show run $20-$29. Caldwell Theatre Company is located at 7873 North Federal Highway in Boca Raton. For information, call (561) 241-7432.
As for next season at the Caldwell, Sept. 9-Oct. 15 leads off with Over the River and Through the Woods, which production spokesperson Jim Reams calls, "The biggest hit in our 25-year history, so we're bringing it back." Five of the six previous cast members are returning. -- By David Lefkowitz
