Cruz, Hanlon and Sun to Star in Westport's tick, tick...BOOM!

News   Cruz, Hanlon and Sun to Star in Westport's tick, tick...BOOM! Casting has been announced for the Westport Country Playhouse's upcoming production of the late Jonathan Larson's musical tick, tick. . . BOOM!, which will begin performances at the Connecticut venue June 23.

Directed by Scott Schwartz, who helmed the original Off-Broadway production, the musical — "about a young artist on the verge in New York City" — will run through July 18.

The cast will comprise Wilson Cruz ("My So-Called Life," Rent) as Michael, Colin Hanlon (Rent, Pirates of Penzance, I Love You Because) as Jon and Pearl Sun (Happiness, Walmartopia) as Susan.

In a statement Mark Lamos, Westport Country Playhouse artistic director, said, "I couldn't be more excited to produce this work that captures the spirit and vitality of youth and the anxieties we face with big life changes. What Jonathan Larson so wonderfully delineates is the way we all try to hold onto youth way past its expiration date. While he wishes us to hold fast to our dreams, Larson is hip to the impossibility of staying young forever, and he's ultimately okay with that. In that sense, tick, tick...BOOM! is a wonderfully liberating little musical."

The production team includes Charles Czarnecki, musical director; Christopher Gattelli, choreographer; David Farley, scenic design; Ilona Somogyi, costume design; Herrick Goldman, lighting design; Jon Weston, sound design; and Matthew Melchoirre, production stage manager.

tick, tick...BOOM!, according to Westport, contains mature language and themes. Jonathan Larson also composed the Pulitzer and Tony-winning Rent.
