Stratford's Square One Theatre Company will wrap up their ninth season with a celebration of life as they present To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday May 7-May 22.
A romantic comedy, Gillian concerns a family of "nice" people dealing with the loss of a loved one. After the death of his wife two years prior, David, an embittered professor, retreats with his daughter Rachel to a Nantucket Cottage. As the two-year anniversary of Gillian's death rolls around, concerned in-laws Esther and Paul arrive to attempt to infuse life back into David. With the help of a recently divorced, former student of David's, the crew attempts to coax the chief mourner away from his fantasy life where he and Gillian still live happily.
The play, penned by author Michael Brady, was adapted into a low budget film in spring 1996. Constructed as an actors' showcase, To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday boasted an all-star cast: Pete Gallagher, Michelle Pfeiffer, Claire Danes and Seth Green.
The cast of Square One's production includes Jim Bozzi, Tori Cohen, Glory Gallo, Mary Ellen Maloney, Mary L. Payne, Priscilla Squires and Ray Wiederhold.
Director Tom Holehan, also the Artistic Director for Square One Theatre Company, brings Kenneth C. Mard (set) and Kevin May (lighting) together as the design team. To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday opens at the Stratford Theatre May 7 and runs through May 22. Tickets can be purchased at the box office or by calling (203) 375-8778.
