News Cynthia Erivo Sings from The Last Five Years The star of the upcoming concert version of the show gives a teaser at Elsie Fest.
Cynthia Erivo

Cynthia Erivo first performed “I Can Do Better Than That” in concert with Jason Robert Brown in London.

She then reprised the song at her concert with him at Subculture as part of his residency. Next week, she joins Joshua Henry and Brown in a one-night-only concert event of The Last Five Years at Town Hall to raise money and awareness for the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence. In a type of sneak peek, Erivo sang the song at Labor Day’s Elsie Fest on Coney Island.

True, the Tony winner mixes up the words in some spots, but with that sound, no one in that audience seemed to care—and who could blame them?

This was the second annual Elsie Fest, and the first at the Coney Island location. (Last year’s inaugural festival took place September 27, 2015 at Pier 97 on the Hudson River.) Organized by Darren Criss (Glee, Hedwig and the Angry Inch), talent manager Ricky Rollins and president of Jujamacyn Theaters Jordan Roth, the festival aims to do for musical theatre songs what Coachella does for multitudes of musical genres. The Elsie Fest lineup also featured appearances by Tituss Burgess, Tony nominee Megan Hilty, Corey Cott, Todrick Hall, Lindsay Mendez, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, Tony winner Lena Hall and more. A portion of the proceeds benefitted Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids.
