"For 52 years, I have been doing plays that — unless they're Shakespeare — I've never read," she declared recently, astonishing a roomful of movie press. "I just said 'Yes' when I've been offered something so I've been lucky when something [good] comes along."
She continued, "I didn't know about Nine. …The day came when I was asked to meet Rob and John [the film version's director Rob Marshall and producer John DeLuca] at Claridges in London. I went in, looked at them both and said, 'Yes, yes. Why not?' But I had not heard 'Folies Bergeres,' I had not read it, I had not seen it. I just take it on a complete instinct, and I knew straight away the moment I walked in and met them that I passionately wanted to be a part of it. I can't believe that it actually happened, and I'm thrilled it did happen."
