A teleplay by playwright Paddy Chayefsky that hasn't been seen since 1955 has worked its way to Hollywood's Working Stage Company, as part of its continuing Golden Age of Television Series. The theatre will present a staged reading of The Catered Affair, featuring Dan Lauria (the father on TV's "The Wonder Years") on February 26.
The free reading is already sold-out, but names are being taken for a waiting list in case there are cancellations.
Catered Affair was broadcast live on the Goodyear Television Playhouse, and Working Stage is using the original teleplay.
The story centers on an Irish-American couple in the Bronx who come into conflict over their daughter's wedding. The mother insists on making it an extravagant affair -- even if it entails spending well beyond their means - straining her relationship with her cab-driver husband.
In addition to Lauria, the cast also features Mary Tower, Dana J. Kelly, Robyn Sumners, Hali Frankel, John Nicholas, Mary Ann Link, Annette Keller, Robert Amico, and John Goffredo. The Catered Affair will be performed Feb. 26 at 8 PM at The Working Stage, 1516 N. Gardner St., West Hollywood, CA. Admission is free. For information call (323) 851-2603. -- By Diane Snyder
