The young conductor will assume the post midway through the 2006-07 season; he has agreed to a three-and-a-half-year contract. He will succeed Manfred Honeck, who has led the SRSO since 2000.

At 30, Harding has already completed a four-year term as music director of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie in Bremen. He is currently the music director of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, and will become principal guest conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra in 2006.

"Daniel Harding was our first choice," said managing director Michael Tyd_n.

"The Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra has very high expectations and wide-ranging ambitions," he added. "This also concerns our choice of conductors."
