NBC's upcoming holiday special Hairspray Live! will make its broadcast premiere December 7.

Craig Zadan and Neil Meron serve as executive producers of the annual NBC live musical. Kenny Leon will direct with Harvey Fierstein providing new written material. Jerry Mitchell will serve as choreographer with song writing by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

As previously reported, producers of the live telecast of the Tony-winning musical are seeking young actresses for the starring role of Tracy Turnblad.

Open auditions will take place in New York City April 24 from 10 AM–2 PM. Sign-in begins at 9 AM. Casting is by Telsey + Co.

Actresses, 18-years-old or older, are asked to come prepared to sing the show’s opening number, “Good Morning Baltimore,” a cappella.

Here’s how they break down the character. “She must be heavyset, be outgoing, unstoppable, good-hearted with a vibrant, lovable high-spirited personality who loves to dance. A strong pop belt singer and great mover who can become a teen heroine.”

Auditions will take place at Telsey + Co., located at 311 West 43rd Street (10th Floor), New York, NY. Email [email protected] with any questions.

Based on the 1988 John Waters film of the same name, Hairspray won 2003 Tony Awards for Best Score (Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman), Best Book (Thomas Meehan and Mark O'Donnell), Best Actress in a Musical (Marissa Jaret Winokur), Best Actor (Harvey Fierstein), Best Featured Actor in a Musical (Dick Latessa), Best Costume Design (William Ivey Long), Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical. Jack O'Brien directed the original, which featured choreography by Jerry Mitchell.

A screen adaptation of the musical, which was also produced by Zadan and Meron, premiered in 2007.
