Comedian David Alan Grier of TV's "In Living Color" succeeds Whoopi Goldberg July 15 as Pseudolus in the Broadway revival of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.

Grier, who made his mark in the recurring "Men on Film" movie-critic parody skit ("Loved It! Hated It!") has a long stage resume, having starred in the Jackie Robinson Broadway musical The First, and Off Broadway in A Soldier's Play.

Goldberg had been scheduled to play Pseudolus in the Broadway revival through June 29 but then extended through July 13. On June 5, the New York Post first hinted at the news by reporting that the two main (and male) contenders for the role were Grier and Chris Elliot (filmdom's Cabin Boy).

Appearing with Grier will be long-term cast members Ernie Sabella (Lycus), Jim Stanek & Jessica Boevers as the young lovers, and Chris Groenendal as Miles Gloriosus. Ross Lehman, who replaced Mark Linn-Baker, also continues as Hysterium.

Other Grier credits include Dreamgirls and a Public Theatre production of The Merry Wives Of Windsor. He also appeared in the 1996 Encores! concert staging of One Touch Of Venus in New York.

Among those who will see one of Goldberg's final performances will be members of the Democratic National Committee, which bought out the entire June 30 performance.
