The acclaimed actor told the Hollywood Reporter that It Shoulda Been You, which he directed at the George Street Playhouse in October 2011, will arrive on Broadway in the upcoming season or early in 2015.
The George Street cast featured Lisa Howard as Jenny Steinberg, Tom Deckman as Walt/Uncle Morty, Mylinda Hull as Mildred/Aunt Sheila, Tony winner Tyne Daly as Judy Steinberg, Richard Kline as Murray Steinberg, Jessica Hershberg as Rebecca Steinberg, Matthew Hydzik as Brian Howard, Curtis Holbrook as Greg Madison, Carla Duren as Annie Sheps, Edward Hibbert as Albert, Tony winner Harriet Harris as Georgette Howard, Howard McGillin as George Howard and David Josefsberg as Marty Kaufman.
The new musical, based on a concept by Barbara Anselmi, has book and lyrics by Brian Hargrove, with music by Anselmi and additional lyrics by Jill Abramovitz, Carla Rose Fisher, Michael Cooper, Ernie Lijoi and Will Randall.
It Shoulda Been You is billed as "a musical comedy for anyone with parents. The bride (played by Ms. Hershberg) is Jewish. The groom (played by Mr. Hydzik) is Catholic. Her mother (played by Ms. Daly) is a force of nature, his mother (played by Ms. Harris) is a tempest in a cocktail shaker. And when the bride’s ex-boyfriend (played by Mr. Josefsberg) shows up, the perfect wedding starts to unravel faster than you can whistle 'Here Comes the Bride!' Plots are hatched, pacts are made, secrets exposed — and the sister of the bride (played by Ms. Howard) is left to turn a tangled mess into happily ever after! Thrust in the middle of the marital mishegas is Albert, the wedding planner (played by Mr. Hibbert). Mr. Kline will portray the bride’s father Murray, and Mr. McGillin will portray the groom’s playing opposite Ms. Daly and Ms. Harris, respectively."
