As previously reported, composer-lyricist Sondheim and Ives (Venus in Fur, All in the Timing) are working on a new musical based on two renowned films by Spanish director Luis Buñel. "It's an idea I've had for a long time and it springs indirectly from a moment in a play of David's," Sondheim has said.
"It's the most fun in the world, we're working away. He's writing the music," Ives told Playbill.com. "Sometimes I go over to his house and he sits down at the piano and sings to me. It's like having Mozart sing to you."
The Public Theater and producer Scott Rudin are also attached to the projects, and artistic director Oskar Eustis has said in a statement, "We will do it whenever Steve tells us to. The movies are two of Buñuel's most brilliant films, and what I adore about them – and what I think Steve and David responded to – are that they are masterpieces of surrealism and masterpieces of political commentary."
The Primary Stages production of Lives of the Saints, a collection of short plays written by Ives and directed by Tony winner John Rando, will play The Duke on 42nd St. Feb. 3-March 27. Tickets can be purchased by visiting primarystages.org or by calling (646) 223 3010.
