David Soul and Janie Dee to Be London's Mack and Mabel

Jerry Herman's musical — with a book by Michael Stewart — is West End bound once more.

David Soul will star alongside Janie Dee in John Doyle's staging, already seen at the Watermill in Newbury. A U.K. tour will start in Bath on Jan. 24, 2006, culminating in a London stint.

"Starsky and Hutch" actor Soul will attract less controversy here than was the case with his last musical; he played the title role in Jerry Springer — The Opera in the famous BBC telecast (and in the stage production) that attracted record numbers of complaints, largely from Christian pressure groups.

Ironically, he didn't sing in that show. However, the role of Mack Sennett, the film director who finds his muse and love with Mabel Normand, includes such standards as "I Won't Send Roses," "Movies Were Movies" and "I Promise You a Happy Ending".

Soul and Dee have worked together before, in Alan Ayckbourn's play Comic Potential (which saw Dee walk off with an Olivier Award). Her musical credits include Carousel for the National Theatre and the George Gershwin show, My One and Only.

Mack and Mabel first played Broadway in 1974 with Bernadette Peters and Robert Preston in the leads. Caroline O'Connor and Howard McGillin starred in the 1995 London staging.
