The 9:30 PM concert, entitled "An Evening with the Monkey Man," finds the composer of The Full Monty and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels performing selections from his solo recording "Evil Monkey Man," which was released earlier this year. Yazbek is joined by his band, His Warmest Regards.
"These songs come out of a tumultuous time in my life when I experienced a personal loss and I touched some real darkness," Yazbek said in a previous statement about "Evil Monkey Man." "That said, I can't help but find things funny, so there's a lot of gallows humor and regular old humor in these songs. But they're deadly serious and the place they come from is real."
A recording artist, vocalist and pianist, Yazbek was Tony Award-nominated for the musicals The Full Monty and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. His first album, "The Laughing Man," won the N.A.I.R.D. Award for Best Pop Album of the Year. He has also served as a writer for "Late Night with David Letterman."
In addition to Yazbek, the musical roster at Spiegelworld also includes Ute Lemper (Aug. 26), Martha Wainwright (Sept. 16), Nellie McKay (Oct. 12) and Jollyship the Whizbang (Oct. 20).
Spiegelworld is located at the Fulton Fish Market, Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport under the Brooklyn Bridge. Tickets are available by calling (212) 279-4200 or by visiting SpiegelWorld.
