The awards administered by TheatreWashington address work seen in the year 2011 in theatres in DC and environs, including Maryland and Virginia.

The recipient of the 2012 John Aniello Award for Outstanding Emerging Theatre Company was previously announced: Faction of Fools, the troupe devoted to commedia dell'arte, in residence at Gallaudet University.

The Kennedy Center's Follies, which ended up on Broadway and will play Los Angeles this spring, was among resident production nominees. The Steppenwolf Theatre Company production of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, which is Broadway-bound, was nominated in the Non-Resident Play category for its engagement at Arena Stage.

The category of The Charles MacArthur Award for Outstanding New Play or Musical included seven nominees. Deb Margolin's Imagining Madoff, about investment schemer Bernard Madoff, is among the titles.
