Classical Theatre of Harlem artistic director Alfred Preisser and Randy Weiner authored the play, which was inspired by Molière's Tartuffe. Performances run June 12-July 19 at the Clurman Theater in midtown; opening night is June 25.
In addition to De Shields (Impressionism, Prymate), the cast includes Ted Lange ("The Love Boat"), Kim Brockington (Angela's Mixtape), Jennifer Akabue, Gerron Atkinson, Jabari Brisport, Tyrone Davis, Soneelea Nankani, Gina Marie Rivera, Charletta Rozzell, Lawrence Street, Kisa Willis and Reji Woods.
Archbishop Supreme Tartuffe, according to press notes, "is an original play with music, inspired by Molière's great comic classic and informed by the gloriously unorthodox ministries of Reverend Ike, Daddy Grace, and Rasputin. Set within a fabulously theatrical Harlem Renaissance-era 'church,' the play explores the outrageously creative criminal mind of the title character through a series of songs, dances, sermons and feats of divine inspiration."
