The producers of Dear Evan Hansen have announced that Taylor Trensch, currently starring on Broadway in Hello, Dolly!, will star as the title character in the Tony-winning musical beginning mid-January 2018. Noah Galvin, fresh off his performance in ABC’s The Real O’Neals, will play the role of Evan Hansen beginning November 21, until Trensch begins performances next year.
As previously announced, Ben Platt, the show’s Tony-winning star, will depart the Broadway musical November 19.
“Evan is such a complex and rewarding role, and I can’t wait to see Noah and Taylor make it their own,” director Michael Greif commented in a press statement. “Nothing excites me more than working with young talent, and both young men are incredibly skilled and surprising performers.”

In further casting news, the show has announced that original cast members Laura Dreyfuss, Tony winner Rachel Bay Jones, Jennifer Laura Thompson, Tony nominee Mike Faist, Michael Park, and Will Roland have all extended their contracts and will remain with the musical through May 2018. Kristolyn Lloyd will depart in March next year.
“We’re excited to welcome Noah and Taylor to our Dear Evan Hansen Family and I’m deeply joyful that our other original company members will remain in our show,” added producer Stacey Mindich. “As we embark on casting for the national tour and future productions of the show, it’s thrilling to begin discovering new, exciting talent for this unique role.”
Platt’s departure this fall marks the conclusion of a long journey with the show, having been involved with the acclaimed new musical since its early developmental stages. Prior to Dear Evan Hansen arriving on Broadway at the Music Box Theatre, Platt played the title role in the world premiere at Arena Stage and during the show’s Off-Broadway debut at Second Stage Theatre.
The original musical features a score by the Tony- and Oscar-winning songwriting team of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (Dogfight, A Christmas Story), a book by Tony winner Steven Levenson (Masters of Sex), choreography by Danny Mefford (Fun Home), and direction by multiple Tony nominee Greif (Rent, Next to Normal, If/Then).
