After one year as President and CEO of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Debora L. Spar has formally resigned from her position with the organization.

“The advancement of the arts is a cause very close to my heart, both on a personal and professional level, but I feel compelled at this moment to refocus on other interests,” she said in a statement. Spar, who previously served as President of Barnard College, intends to return to academia.

Russell Granet, who serves as executive vice president of education and community engagement, has been named new acting president, effective immediately. A formal search for a permanent successor will follow.

The news arrives after a series of setbacks with the organization, including jettisoned renovations for the Center’s David Geffen Hall (home to the New York Philharmonic) and the discontinuation of the Lincoln Center Festival.
