Classic Arts News Deborah Voigt Withdraws From First Marschallin in Vancouver Soprano Deborah Voigt has withdrawn from an upcoming Vancouver Opera production of Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier, in which she was to make her much-anticipated debut as the Marschallin.
In a statement issued through the opera company, a representative for Voigt said that the recent succession of hurricanes that hit Florida, where she lives, had left her "stretched too thin and exhausted" to be ready for the role later this month.

"Like many people in Florida," the statement read, "her personal life was unsettled by the recent hurricanes and the subsequent interruption to her schedule left her unable to complete her personal preparations."

Carol Wilson, who is currently singing the Marschallin at Germany's Theatre Aachen, has agreed to step in for Voigt at Vancouver Opera's first-ever performances of Rosenkavalier, on October 16, 19, 21, and 23.

Voigt's is well known for her performances of Strauss, particularly of Ariadne in Ariadne auf Naxos, and the opera world has eagerly awaited her first performances as the Marschallin, one of the composer's greatest‹and most challenging ‹roles. She is also scheduled to perform the role at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in January and at the Vienna State Opera in May, but her performances in Vancouver would have given her a final run-through, of sorts, on a less prominent stage.
