One of two New York dances modeled on the Vienna debutante event took place on January 18 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, and featured 800 people. The Croatian ball will take place tonight with the same program of music and dance featured at last year's Vienna Opera Ball.

In Dubai on February 17, the Vienna State Opera's orchestra and dancers will perform for 60 couples at the ball. It is unclear whether the Viennese ensembles will perform at the other events.

The Belgrade event will take place in September.

The reason for exporting the famous Austrian event, according to Viennese socialite Elisabeth G‹rtler, is that "it gives Austria publicity and allows the Vienna Opera to license the concept and to lend its competence in the area to other countries." Each city that holds a Vienna Opera Ball event pays a fee, which was undisclosed, for the rights to do so.

The original debutante ball, held at the Vienna State Opera House, takes place on February 3, and all 6,990 tickets for the event have been sold since last April. According to the AFP, the Vienna event, for the first time, will feature Japanese and Chinese couples.
