News Denzel Washington to Speak and Receive Honorary Degree at University of Pennsylvania Commencement Tony and Academy Award winner Denzel Washington will speak to graduating students at the 255th University of Pennsylvania commencement May 16, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Washington, whose son Malcolm is currently a sophomore at the university, will also receive an honorary degree at the commencement, along with Joyce Carol Oates, El-ichi Negishi, Nicholas D. Kristof, Mo Ibrahim, Renee C. Fox and Sheryl WuDunn.

Washington received a 2010 Tony Award for the revival of Fences and Academy Awards for "Glory" and "Training Day." Additional stage credits include Julius Caesar, Checkmates, Richard III, The Mighty Gents and A Soldier's Play (Obie Award). He holds additional Oscar nominations for "The Hurricane," "Malcolm X" and "Cry Freedom," among many other screen credits.
