Hausen, who was also an accomplished orchestrator and vocal teacher, died at the age of 52 this past January from complications due to cancer. Born and raised in New York City, he studied at the Mannes School of Music before becoming the resident musical director at Catch a Rising Star and Upstairs at Greene Street. During that period, he provided piano accompaniment for such comics as Richard Belzer, Mario Cantone and Joy Behar, as well as singers Pat Benatar, Leata Galloway and Marta Sanders.

It was also during that time that he met comedienne-singer-producer Jamie deRoy. Hausen was deRoy's musical director for 25 years and created songs and orchestrations for her many recordings. He also composed the score for the musical revue, How'm I Doin'?, about former Mayor Koch and later was commissioned by Robert Joffrey to write the music for the ballet American Dreams.

Among the many artists he accompanied were Tommy James and the Shondells, BJ Thomas, Jane Olivor, Tony Orlando, Engelbert Humperdink, Baby Jane Dexter, Heather MacRae, Deborah Tranelli, Mary Foster Conklin, Bobby Alto and Buddy Mantilla. Hausen served as President of ARTS/Education Inc. and produced educational children's theatre, including the Young People's Theater Project.
