"Desperate Housewives" Actress Hamilton Is Bewitching in Bell, Book and Candle

News   "Desperate Housewives" Actress Hamilton Is Bewitching in Bell, Book and Candle
Melinda Paige Hamilton — who has appeared on ABC-TV's "Desperate Housewives" — will be the bewitched star in the upcoming Old Globe staging of John Van Druten's Bell, Book and Candle.

Darko Tresnjak directs the San Diego company's summer presentation, which begins Aug. 4 and opens Aug. 9 at the Cassius Carter Centre Stage for a run through Sept. 9.

The "magical" work centers on a witch who falls in love with a publisher and casts a spell on him to dump his fiancée for her. "But witches, unfortunately, cannot fall in love," an announcement reveals, "which leads to a number of hilarious difficulties, where Gillian loses her witch's powers, her cat deserts her, and her aunt and warlock brother don't quite know how to relate to Gillian as a human." (The play served as the basis for the television series "Bewitched.")

Old Globe vet Melinda Paige Hamilton (All My Sons) will star as the witch opposite John Lavelle, Adrian La Tourelle, Gregor Paslawsky (Pericles, The Two Noble Kinsmen) and Deborah Taylor (Twelfth Night, The Magic Fire.

The design team includes Alexander Dodge (scenic), Emily Pepper (costumes), Matt Richards (lighting) and Paul Peterson (sound). Lisa Porter serves as stage manager.

British playwright and director Van Druten penned the original plays I Am a Camera (the basis for the musical Cabaret) and I Remember Mama. Other works include Old Acquaintance — which currently enjoys a Broadway revival with another "Desperate Housewives" actress, Harriet Harris — as well as Leave Her to Heaven, Make Way for Lucia, The Mermaids Singing, The Voice of the Turtle and Solitaire, among others. He directed the original Broadway run of The King and I. Director Tresnjak has served as artistic director of the Globe's Shakespeare Festivals (2004-2007), and his credits include Hamlet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Titus Andronicus, The Comedy of Errors, The Winter's Tale, Pericles and Antony and Cleopatra at The Old Globe as well as The Two Noble Kinsmen at The Public Theater.

Tickets for Bell, Book and Candle at The Old Globe, 1363 Old Globe Way in Balboa Park, are available by calling Globe Ticket Services at (619) 23-GLOBE or visit theoldglobe.org.
