Despite Buzz of a Broadway Transfer, Hamilton Announces Another Off-Broadway Extension | Playbill

News Despite Buzz of a Broadway Transfer, Hamilton Announces Another Off-Broadway Extension Hamilton, the highly anticipated new musical from Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda that fuses contemporary and classic to tell the story of America's Founding Father, has extended again at Off-Broadway's The Public Theater despite buzz of a Broadway transfer.

The Off-Broadway production at the Public's Newman Theater will now run an additional four weeks through May 3. The extended engagement was originally scheduled through April 5.

The New York Post reported Feb. 3 that the musical may transfer to Broadway in time for this year's Tony Awards and that the producers (led by Jeffrey Seller, who produced Miranda's Tony-winning In the Heights) have the right to cancel the extension at Off-Broadway's Public.

Talk is circulating about the musical taking the Richard Rodgers (home to Heights from 2008-11) after If/Then plays its final performance March 22. However, the Public announced Feb. 4 that a new block of tickets is now on sale through May.

The new musical reunites the award-winning In the Heights team. Tony nominee Thomas Kail is at the helm, with choreography from Tony Award winner Andy Blankenbuehler. Miranda, who wrote the show's book, music and lyrics, stars in the title role.

Previews began Jan. 20, and opening night is scheduled for Feb. 17. The Public Theater engagement is supported by Seller, Sander Jacobs and Jill Furman, all of whom helped usher Miranda's In the Heights to Broadway in 2008.

Inspired by the book "Alexander Hamilton" by Ron Chernow, the musical incorporates historical figures such as George Washington, Aaron Burr, James Madison and Thomas Jefferson. Miranda previously performed a song from Hamilton for President Obama and the First Family at the White House in 2009.

The Public and TodayTix will continue to offer "Hamilton for a Hamilton" ($10), furthering the innovative new partnership with TodayTix and The Public's ongoing commitment to making theatre accessible to everyone. During the run of Hamilton, a pair of tickets will be available for each performance for $10 per ticket. The lottery will begin each day at midnight for the performance that same day, and winners will be notified three to four hours before show time. Winners will make the payment in the TodayTix app and collect the tickets at the box office.

The complete cast features Carleigh Bettiol (ensemble); Andrew Chappelle (swing); Ariana DeBose (ensemble); Alysha Deslorieux (swing); Daveed Diggs (Marquis De Lafayette, Thomas Jefferson); Renée Elise Goldsberry (Angelica Schuyler); Sydney James Harcourt (ensemble); Sasha Hutchings (ensemble); Christopher Jackson (George Washington); Brian d'Arcy James (King George); Thayne Jasperson (ensemble); Jasmine Cephas Jones (Peggy Schuyler, Maria Reynolds); Stephanie Klemons (swing); Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton); Javier Muñoz (Hamilton Standby); Leslie Odom Jr. (Aaron Burr); Okieriete Onaodowan (Hercules Mulligan, James Madison); Anthony Ramos (John Laurens, Phillip Hamilton); Jon Rua (ensemble); Phillipa Soo (Eliza Hamilton); Seth Stewart (ensemble); Betsy Struxness (ensemble); Ephraim Sykes (ensemble); and Voltaire Wade-Greene (swing).
