The play, written by Nick Dear, features Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller alternating in the roles of Victor Frankenstein and the Creature; it opens officially in the Olivier Theatre with press nights for each combination on Feb. 22 and 23 (following previews that began Feb. 5).

According to publicity materials, this classic gothic tale addresses issues of scientific responsibility, parental neglect, cognitive development and the nature of good and evil. Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein's bewildered creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes, the friendless Creature, increasingly desperate and vengeful, determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal.

In addition to Cumberbatch, last seen at the National last year in After the Dance, and Miller, last seen onstage on Broadway in After Miss Julie, the cast also features Mark Armstrong, Martin Chamberlain, Josie Daxter, Haydon Downing, Steven Elliott, George Harris, Noamie Harris, Daniel Ings, Karl Johnson, John Killoran, Daniel Millar, William Nye, Andreea Padurariu, Jared Richard, Ella Smith, John Stahl and Lizzie Winkler.

Frankenstein is designed by Mark Tildesley, with costumes by Suttirat Anne Larlarb and lighting by Bruno Poet. The director of movement is Toby Sedgwick, and the fight director is Kate Waters. The music and soundscore is by Underworld, with Alex Baranowski as music associate. Sound design is by Underworld and Ed Clarke.
