A May 31 presentation was held to test the concept of putting The Muppets on stage, Tony Award-winning Disney Theatrical Productions president and producer Thomas Schumacher told Variety. Over 85 Muppets were used in the "elaborate" presentation that included Kermit the Frog's signature song, "Rainbow Connection."

Timbers also directed The Pee-wee Herman Show on Broadway. He will also helm the Broadway production of Rocky The Musical next season.

No official plans are in place for a full production, but Schumacher said he was "intrigued" by the 15-minute presentation which tested the technical demands of presenting The Muppets with a live audience of invited guests at the New Amsterdam Theatre. Pre-existing Muppets material was used.

Timbers first conceived the idea while working on the imaginative Peter and the Starcatcher for Disney.

Disney is also developing stage productions of "Shakespeare in Love" and "Father of the Bride." A revamped production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame is also in development.
