The evening will mark the North American premiere of the film. Co-stars Thompson and Hanks will be in attendance at the Opening Night Gala, along with director John Lee Hancock and other stars from the film.
A program of the American Film Institute, AFI Fest, according to press notes, is a "celebration of global cinema and today’s Hollywood – a showcase for the best festival films of the year and an opportunity for master filmmakers and emerging artists to come together with audiences in the movie capital of the world." This year’s edition takes place Nov. 7-14.
Inspired by true events, "Saving Mr. Banks" is the "extraordinary, untold story of how Walt Disney’s classic 'Mary Poppins' made it to the screen" and also stars Paul Giamatti, Jason Schwartzman, Bradley Whitford, Annie Rose Buckley, Ruth Wilson, B.J. Novak, Rachel Griffiths, Kathy Baker and Colin Farrell.
The screening will be held at the TCL Chinese Theatre, formerly Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, where, almost 50 years ago in 1964, Disney’s “Mary Poppins” premiered.
The film will be released in select U.S. cinemas Dec. 13 and will open wide Dec. 20.
