Playwright Neil Simon will ring the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange, Dec. 27, 9:30 AM. The event is part of a series of celebs ringing the opening and closing bells of the NYSE, Dec. 15-Jan. 7. Simon was the only playwright selected for the honor, with the luminary list also including Art Buchwald, Hank Aaron, Joe Namath, Walter Cronkite and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
A Wall Street spokesperson told Playbill On-Line the bell-ringers were selected for the "Briging the Millennium" program because, "as we approach the millennium," the NYSE wanted to honor "people who've given tremendously to this century."
Simon is the author of Proposals, God's Favorite, Fools, Broadway Bound, Biloxi Blues, The Dinner Party and Come Blow Your Horn.
