Classic Arts News Documentary on Alvin Ailey Company to Air on PBS "Beyond the Steps: Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater," a new television documentary about the pioneering — and very popular — company, makes its broadcast premiere tonight on PBS's Great Performances.
Phil Bertelsen's film looks at the recent history of the company under artistic director Judith Jamison, who succeeded Ailey following his death in 1989. Included are AAADT's tour to the Stars of the White Nights festival in St. Petersburg last summer (the company's first visit to Russia in 15 years); its move to a custom-built office and rehearsal facility; and Jamison's creation and development of a new ballet entitled Love Stories.

The broadcast is scheduled to air tonight at 8 pm (Eastern time) on most PBS stations; viewers should check their local listings for exact day and time (as well as any possible rebroadcasts). More information about "Beyond the Steps: Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater" and other PBS Great Performances programs is available at www.pbs.org/wnet/gperf/.
