Classic Arts News   Domingo Wants to Sing Baritone Role

Tenor Plšcido Domingo would like to sing the baritone title role in Verdi's Simon Boccanegra, the Associated Press reports.

Domingo said he wanted to add the role to his repertoire during a roundtable discussion at the Metropolitan Opera on April 23. The session was part of the Met's live radio broadcast of Wagner's Die Walk‹re, in which Domingo played Siegmund.

A spokesman for Domingo told the AP that the singer had not yet been engaged for the role.

Earlier in his career, Domingo sang baritone roles in productions of zarzuela, the Spanish popular opera form in which his parents specialized.

Also in the roundtable, soprano Deborah Voigt said that she hoped to sing Minnie from Puccini's La fanciulla del West.
