Shanley, who earned a Tony and Pulitzer Prize for the 90-minute stage play, has penned and directed the film that stars Academy Award winners Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman, as well as Amy Adams and Viola Davis. Fifteen-thousand copies of TCG's first printing of the screenplay have sold out. Publisher's notes for the screenplay read: "'Doubt' is set in a Bronx Catholic school in 1964, where a strong-minded woman wrestles with conscience and uncertainty as she is faced with concerns about one of her male colleagues. The play dramatizes issues straight from today's headlines, within a world recreated with knowing detail and a judicious eye by Bronx-born-and-bred Shanley, the Academy Award-winning author of 'Moonstruck.'"
Shanley's plays include Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, Dirty Story, Four Dogs and a Bone, Psychopathia Sexualis, Sailor's Song, Savage in Limbo, Where's My Money? and the libretto to the Henry Krieger musical Romantic Poetry. Shanley dedicates "Doubt" "to the many orders of Catholic nuns who devoted their lives to serving others in hospitals, schools, and retirement homes."
"Doubt" is available for $12.95 from Theatre Communications Group. Visit www.tcg.org for additional information.
