Terrence McNally’s new play Fire and Air, which will receive a world premiere production from Off-Broadway's Classic Stage Company helmed by Artistic Director John Doyle this winter, has found its cast.
The ballet drama explores the rich history behind Sergei Diaghilev’s preeminent company the Ballet Russes, including his tempestuous relationship with celebrated dancer Vaslav Nijinsky.
The production will feature a cast made up of Tony winner Douglas Hodge (Cyrano de Bergerac) as Diaghilev and James Cusati-Moyer (Six Degrees of Separation) as Nijinsky. Completing the cast will be Tony nominee Marin Mazzie (Ragtime, The King and I) as Misia, John Glover (The Cherry Orchard) as Dima, Jay Armstrong Johnson (Off-Broadway's current The Mad Ones, On the Town) as Massine, and Oscar nominee Marsha Mason (The Goodbye Girl) as Dunya.
Fire and Air will begin performances January 17, 2018, ahead of a February 1 opening night. The limited engagement is scheduled through February 25.
The CSC staging will feature scenic design by Doyle, costume design by Ann Hould-Ward, lighting design by Jane Cox, sound design by Matt Stine, and hair and make-up design by J. Jared Janas.
McNally is a four-time Tony-winning playwright and musical book writer; his works include Love! Valour! Compassion!, Master Class, Kiss of the Spider Woman, and Ragtime. Doyle is the artistic director of CSC and Tony-winning Broadway director.
