After picking up his pen as a playwright at age 60, Douglas Mitchell will be feted at Houston's Stages Repertory Theatre April 28-May 13 with the presentation of seven of his one-acts on the Rep's stages.

The festival features seven plays: "Old Friends," "Shatter the Golden Vessel," "Any Old Passion," "All Wrapped Up," "Loss of Interest" and "How to Sacrifice a Child." Each will be presented in different combinations, two per weekend.

A linguist with Rice University for 20 years (whose ancient language skills include Old Icelandic and Sanskrit), Mitchell began writing plays in 1990. Outside of Texas, he received fall production of his Old Friends alongside Edward Albee's Zoo Story directed by Albee in the Netherlands as well as several planned performances of his works in Germany.

Stages Rep artistic director Rob Bundy picked the playwright for the theatre's playwright-in-residence program, remembering when he first saw Mitchell's work in the back room of a Mexican restaurant three years ago. He describes Mitchell as "Samuel Beckett meets Harold Pinter."

Tickets are $12. Stages Repertory Theatre is located at 3201 Allen Parkway at Waugh. For reservations, call 713-52-STAGES. Stages Repertory Theatre is on the web at http://www.stagestheatre.com. -- By Christine Ehren
