For all the folks who worry that the Tony Awards represent only a small, highly commercial segment of New York Theatre, another awards ceremony is likely to ease their pain a bit: the OOBRs.

It may not have the glitz and glamour that Broadway gets, but according to editor-publisher of the “oobr” (off-off broadway review) John Chatterton, OOB “is New York’s unknown theatrical treasure.” To honor this unsung niche of the stage, “oobr” sponsors its annual OOBR Awards, held this year June 27 at New York City’s Union Square Theatre.

Along with the awards, comes presentations from the past OOB theatre season. Programmed to perform are:

  • Urinetown! (The Musical), by Mark Hollman and Greg Kotis, the ultimate toilet humor comedy.
  • Parker, Kathleen O’Grady and Michael Connors perform The Last Tea, an adaptation of one of Dorothy Parker’s stories.
  • Ice in April, by writer-director Frank Avellino which uses the tragedy of the Titanic as a study of human nature.
  • Berlin to Broadway, in which four singers perform the works of composer Kurt Weill (This year is the 50th anniversary of his death and the 100th of Weill's birth.)
  • The 6th Annual OOBR’s will be presented at the Union Square, 17th Street and Park Ave. South. Catering will be provided by Katz’s Delicatessen. $20 tickets can be purchased by calling (212) 691-2014 or online at CultureFinder.
