The Uptown Theatre, located at Yonge and Bloor Streets in downtown Toronto, opened in 1920 as both a movie house and live stage venue. In 2001, the owners were told by the Ontario Human Rights Commissions to make the theatre wheelchair accessible. The owners decided to close the theatre instead, claiming renovations would be too costly. The venue then became the subject of a campaign to save the landmark venue from demolition.
