Said Drama Desk president David Sheward in a statement, "This year, in the aftermath of September 11, the awards have more significance than ever before. By celebrating excellence in New York theatre, we will also be celebrating the spirit of all new Yorkers and those in the theatre who have carried on nobly in the wake of the disaster."

More than 120 critics and theatre journalists comprise the Drama Desk membership, which prides itself on judging Broadway, Off and Off-Off Broadway theatre by the same standards. This year's Drama Desk nominating committee for the 47th annual awards consists of Frank Scheck (the Hollywood Reporter), Harry Haun (Playbill magazine), David Finkle (the Village Voice), Edward Karam (London Times), Drama Desk president Sheward (Back Stage), Barbara Siegel (Siegel Entertainment) and newcomer Susan Haskins (TV's "Theatre Talk", taking the place held last year by Jonathan Kalb, then of the New York Press.)
